Episode #25 shows the reactions of villagers in Pailin province (about 370 kms to the North West of capital Phnom Penh) to the verdicts and sentence recently announced in the trial of Kaing Guek Eav, alias “Duch”. In his testimony, Duch admitted that, as head of the Khmer Rouge’s notorious S-21 interrogation center, he was ‘responsible’ for many atrocities, even if he didn’t commit them personally. Pailin was considered to be a Khmer Rouge ‘stronghold’ during the regime’s grip of Cambodia from April 1975 to January 1979. This program was first shown on CTN, Cambodia’s leading TV channel, on Monday 16 August (and repeated on Tuesday 17 August) three weeks after the judges’ verdict and sentence were announced in the courtroom.
