This is episode #24 in a series of weekly video updates about the first Khmer Rouge trial proceedings recently concluded in Cambodia. This episode shows the reactions of villagers in Kandal province (about 50 kms from capital Phnom Penh) to the verdicts and sentence recently announced in the case of Kaing Guek Eav, alias “Duch”. During his trial, Duch admitted that, as head of the Khmer Rouge’s notorious S-21 interrogation center, he was ‘responsible’ for many atrocities, even if he didn’t commit them personally. Kandal is a province that was not considered to be a Khmer Rouge ‘stronghold’ during the regime’s grip of Cambodia from April 1975 to January 1979. The program was shown on CTN, Cambodia’s leading TV channel, on Monday 9 August 2010, two weeks after the judges’ decisions were announced in the courtroom.
